According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, new cars are safer today than they have ever been before. All of the improvements made over the past few years to new cars adds up to fewer people dying in car-related crashes, and that’s a really positive thing. While it may seem like there are more recalls than ever before too, the fact of the matter is that most of those notices are minor, and cars are still safer than they have ever been.
Why Cars Are Safer Now
What is it about modern cars that makes them much safer than ever before? Essentially, car technology is more advanced than it has been in years. Technology like stability control, reactive brakes, and rear view cameras has taken cars from semi-dangerous vehicles to vehicles that are mostly safe. While technology can’t prevent some drivers from driving dangerously, it can make the simple act of driving safer. It’s much harder to tip a car now or to avoid stopping short with newer technology.
The Institute for Highway Safety studied a variety of cars manufactured in the year 2011, and found that nine types of cars in particular proved to be the safest. Which cars made the cut? Honda Odyssey, Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, Subaru Legacy, Audi A4, Kia Sorento, Lexus RX 350, Toyota Sequoia, Toyota Highlander hybrid, and the Volvo XC90. There are not the only cars that are safe, but they are the safest ones studied by the Institute for Highway Safety.
The Technology Debate
A number of car technology critics argue that newer car technology makes driving a car more confusing, and, thus, less safe than ever before. However, this is not what the aforementioned study has found to be true. On the flip side, those opposed to new car technology are more focused on things such as speech to text and other voice commands that can potentially distract drivers. Things such as a rear camera and stability control do work towards making cars safer, not less safe.
An easy to install backup camera can add an extra level of safety to an existing car too. Even if your car doesn’t not have the newest and latest safety technology, a simple camera can change just how safe your car is. What do backup cameras do? Have you ever backed your car up wondering just what you’re not seeing? Or, craned your neck to try and peek around another car at the area behind your car?
With a backup camera, you can clearly see what’s behind you just by looking at your dash. Not only are these cameras ideal for avoiding things like trash cans and sidewalks, but they are also the best layer of protection that you have against backing into a person, or a parked car or oncoming car. In other words, these cameras make your car much safer for you, and for any passengers that are with you.
